Synopsis
Taipei Factory is a collaborative project launched by the Directors’ Fortnight and Taipei Film Commission that aims at the emergence of new talents. Four young Taiwanese directors are joined by four young foreign directors from Chile, France, Iran, and South Korea. The eight directors have never been acquainted before, but they shared their life experiences, and co-wrote and co-directed short films based on the impressions and imaginations of a city during 17 days in Taipei. Taipei Factory will showcase the result of these exchanges, 4 short films of 15 minutes each.

- The Pig (Singing Chen, Jéro Yun)

A sacrificed pig, a newly homeless family, and a city longing for rain. With compassion and prayer, they try to survive.

A French documentary director filming a group of Burmese refugees who recounted their sufferings while being trapped in a vacant city apartment building.

- A Nice Travel (Shen Ko-shang, Luis Cifuentes)

Mr. Chang’s life turns upside down when his home mysteriously disappears from the face of the Earth. On a quest to find his home, he has to rethink his identity and being. To be or to become, that is the question for Mr. Chang.

It has recently been restored by the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) through the partnership with Martin Scorcese’s World Cinema Foundation (WCF). FDCP has long been very earnest about film restoration. Last year, it presented its first film restoration Genghis Khan at the Venice International Film Festival.
L’Immagine Ritrovata in Italy, a leading film laboratory, is doing the restoration with the guidance of Mike de Leon who is the producer and cinematographer of the film. FDCP is said to be very pleased with the restoration and looks forward to showcasing it at Cannes. FDCP also continues its advocacy for film preservation with the establishment of the National Film Archives of the Philippines (NFAP) under its auspices which handles such restoration projects.

Thailand’s film service industry has been in the spotlight recently with such high-profile films such as Hangover 2 and The Impossible while the member nations of ASEAN prepare for the greater integration and cooperation to make films.
In Thailand on Screen, a selection of films was screened at SFWorld Cinema on April 3-9. These were examples not only of the well-known hits that have been shot in Thailand, but also some films fresh to Thailand. From box-office smashes to festival award-winners, the session shows the very best of what Thailand can provide to the international film industry.

The Amazing Thailand Film Challenge as a part of the Thailand International Film Destination Festival 2013, Thailand was hosting this very special film event. One hundred filmmakers from across the globe had the opportunity to fly to Thailand and make short films. An official event, sponsored by public funds, the competing teams were provided with return flights, four nights’ accommodation, a budget of 30,000 Thai Baht (approximately $1,000), a local production assistant, and professional production support. Also, the winning films received prizes totaling 1 million Thai Baht (approximately $30,000). Each team comprised 2 filmmakers, who were challenged to see who has the imagination, creativity, resourcefulness, and ingenuity to be able to research, travel, and make a film in a new and unfamiliar country in a limited time.
This was a fine opportunity for the participating teams to meet filmmakers from across the world, to share ideas and learn from the different cultures, and to visit the extraordinary Kingdom of Thailand.

AFCNet Secretariat was on FLY2013 venue search in Thailand on April 8-10. We checked out dozens of resort facilities in the towns near Bangkok named Khao Yai, Pattaya, and Hua Hin. Team AFCNet checked out details from the room types, meeting/banquet facilities to the environment around the area to see if the place is suitable for FLY2013 short film production and workshop. To boost the limitless potential from our to-be-selected trainees, we tried to find a place with spicy cultural characteristics, accessibility both to urban and rural area, and a comfortable accommodation.
Imagining FLY2013 trainees from different culture and background putting their heads together for the collaboration project, team AFCNet did some legwork to find the place fits best for FLY2013.

In the meeting between AFCNet Secretariat (Busan Film Commission) representatives and Thailand Film Office, both parties shared and understood the positive purpose of FLY project, while reassuring our common goal: laying groundwork for the future of Asian film. The meeting was especially meaningful with the presence of Deputy Director General, Mr. Kajorn Weerajal at Department of Tourism. The two host organizations are to navigate the project execution directions together. We now have FLY2013 on the go, please continue your attention and wish us good luck.
